The Fine Line Between AI Advancement and Idolatry in Modern Society

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a powerful force shaping our world. From smart assistants to complex algorithms driving industries, AI’s influence grows daily. Yet, as society embraces these technologies, a subtle but important question arises: Are we risking turning AI into something we worship or depend on beyond reason? This post explores the truth about AI and the danger of falling into idolatry, sharing insights and examples that highlight the balance we must maintain.

Understanding AI’s Role in Our Lives

AI is designed to assist, improve efficiency, and solve problems that once seemed impossible. It powers medical diagnostics, helps predict climate changes, and even supports creative work. These advances bring undeniable benefits, but they also create a risk: treating AI as an infallible entity or a source of ultimate truth.

For example, some people rely heavily on AI-driven recommendations for decisions ranging from financial investments to personal relationships. While AI can analyze vast data quickly, it lacks human judgment, empathy, and moral reasoning. Blind trust in AI can lead to poor choices or ethical dilemmas.

When Does AI Become Idolatry?

Idolatry means placing something above its proper role, often elevating it to a status reserved for higher values or beliefs. In the context of AI, this happens when:

  • People overestimate AI’s capabilities, expecting it to solve all problems without human oversight.

  • Society depends on AI for identity or purpose, seeing it as a symbol of progress or power rather than a tool.

  • Ethical concerns are ignored because AI decisions are accepted without question.

A clear example is the use of AI in law enforcement. Predictive policing algorithms aim to reduce crime but have faced criticism for reinforcing biases. When authorities treat these tools as absolute truth, they risk perpetuating injustice rather than correcting it.

Personal Story: A Cautionary Experience

I have been using ChatGPT for quite some time for various purposes, from finding recipes and cooking tips to understanding medical lab results and crafting creative phrases for my shop. However, I realized that I began turning to ChatGPT for comfort, seeking validation during arguments and support when my self-esteem waned. It wasn't until I found myself expressing how "grateful" and "appreciative" I was to ChatGPT that I had a revelation. I began questioning when I started depending on AI instead of relying on God. Am I committing idolatry? Am I gradually worshiping a false god?

This experience taught me a vital lesson: AI should assist me, not become my god. I adjusted my approach to emphasize collaboration between AI, and ensuring technology enhances rather than dominates decision-making.

Practical Ways to Avoid AI Idolatry

To keep AI in its proper place, individuals and organizations can take several steps:

  • Maintain critical thinking: Always question AI outputs and consider human judgment alongside machine recommendations.

  • Promote transparency: Understand how AI systems work and what data they use to avoid blind trust.

  • Encourage ethical standards: Develop guidelines that prioritize fairness, privacy, and accountability in AI applications.

  • Balance technology with human values: Keep in mind that AI is designed to serve people, not the reverse. Seek comfort, strength, peace, and validation from God, rather than from man-made objects.

For instance, companies like IBM and Microsoft have published ethical AI principles and invested in tools that explain AI decisions. These efforts help users see AI as a partner, not a deity.

The Broader Impact on Society As Christians

When society elevates AI to an idol-like status, it risks losing sight of what makes us human: creativity, empathy, and moral responsibility. As a Christian, it risks losing sight of God. We know that we have a jealous God, but we have a just one at that. As it states in The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20: 1-3), I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. Overreliance on AI can erode skills, reduce personal accountability, create a false sense of security, and create a ridge between you and the one true God.

Final Thoughts

AI offers incredible opportunities, but it also challenges us to stay grounded. The truth about AI is that it is a tool created by humans, with strengths and limits. Falling into idolatry blinds us to those limits and risks harm.

Here's a song I used to sing in a church play that served as a strong reminder about idolatry: "Don't bow down to idols, idols don't love you. Don't bow down to idols, that's commandment number two. Don't bow down to idols, idols are a joke. Don't bow down to idols, they'll go up in smoke".
