In today's fast-paced world, chaos can often feel overwhelming. From daily responsibilities to unexpected challenges, many people yearn for peace. Amid this turmoil, many find comfort and peace through faith, especially by turning to scripture. In this post, we will look closely at how embracing biblical wisdom can help cultivate calmness in our lives, even during challenging times.

The Power of Scripture in Troubling Times

Scripture has a remarkable way of offering comfort when we need it most. Numerous passages emphasize the importance of faith, patience, and trust. For instance, Romans 15:13 states, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him." This reminder helps shift our focus from immediate concerns to the broader promises of faith.

Psalms 121 brings to mind the song "Shoulders" by King and Country. The song's introduction states, "I look up to the mountains. Does my strength come from the mountains? No, my strength comes from God. Who made heaven and earth, and the mountains". Psalm 121:1 serves as a wonderful reminder to seek God's presence amid the chaos and anxiety surrounding us. "My help comes from the LORD". It's a powerful reminder that I often forget during times of overwhelming anxiety.

When confronted with uncertainty, turning to scripture can anchor us like a ship in a storm. These messages often guide us back to what truly matters, reminding us of eternal truths and offering insight during turbulent times. As the song "Shoulders" expresses, "I don't have to see to believe that you're lifting me up on Your shoulders". A recent survey found that nearly 70% of individuals felt less anxious after regularly reading scripture. I can relate to this from my own experience. In college, I chose to live away from my parents. During moments of anxiety and overwhelming times, seeking God and turning to the word has been my comfort through any storm I face.

My Chaotic Storm and How I Got Through It

At 20, I discovered I had a benign pituitary tumor. By 21, I learned I only had one functioning kidney, which was twice the normal size. I contemplated surgery for the tumor while commuting between college, home, and doctor appointments, making numerous visits to specialists without receiving clear answers. At 22, I was informed I had a 10% chance of having children, and the specialist advised me to consider having children soon if I wanted them. By 25, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). It was overwhelming to process all this information. Receiving these diagnoses and news in my early 20s was incredibly challenging. I lost faith and trust in God, to be honest. While some might not find this as severe as what others have faced, at that time, my world felt like it was collapsing, filled with anxiety and little hope for the future.

Amidst my chaos and anxious thoughts, my family, friends, and church community prayed for me. But how did I navigate through it all? For me, music was the key. I like to believe that God communicates with me through music. When I pray and face tough times, I turn on K-Love or the local Christian radio station. Without fail, the song playing reflects what I'm feeling or experiencing. In my early 20s, the song I frequently listened to during trips home for appointments was "Shoulders" by King and Country. The introduction, with one of the singers speaking, always gave me a brief moment of experiencing God's power, love, and comfort.

In 1 Peter 5:7, it states, "cast all your cares and anxieties on Him." When I was young, my mom frequently sang to me (as many moms do), and her song was "I cast all my cares upon you." The lyrics, as I recall, go: "I will cast all my cares upon you. I lay all of my burdens down at your feet, and anytime I don't know what to do, I will cast all my cares upon you." I didn't understand why she sang this to me as a child, but as I've grown older, it has provided great hope in my walk with God. When I'm feeling sad or facing personal challenges, singing this helps me "cast all my cares" onto Him.

Seeking Stillness: Psalms as a Guide

The Book of Psalms shines brightly in offering solace as seen from above in Psalm 121. These poetic reflections capture the essence of human life, revealing a spectrum of emotions while consistently returning to themes of faith.

A striking example is Psalm 46:10, which states, "Be still, and know that I am God." This verse serves as a powerful reminder to pause and connect with the divine. In chaotic moments, dedicating time to reflect on this verse can inspire us to embrace stillness. Carving out just five minutes a day for contemplation can create a space where peace flourishes.

For instance, I work in a hospital and rotate between different floors each week. This alone can be stressful, but during the workday, when I start feeling anxious or overwhelmed, I seek out a quiet spot. Typically, it's a back hallway, a closed floor, the bathroom, the elevator, or even my car. Once there, I gather my thoughts, pray, take a deep breath, and if necessary, cry. Releasing these emotions and entrusting them to God has significantly improved my days. While some stress and anxiety persist, ultimately, I have a choice. I can let it influence my day and mental health, or I can entrust it to the one true God that's bigger than all my problems.

Imagine it like this: you're shopping and browsing through all the clothes, picking them up one by one. You gather a few shirts representing righteousness, thankfulness, gentleness, joy, and so on, holding them with one arm. Then you add some clothes symbolizing anxiety, depression, and overthinking, and it becomes too heavy to carry everything at once. In that moment, it's difficult to continue shopping with all the weight. Then, someone approaches and asks if you need help, relieving you of the burden. That's precisely how God is with us. We have the choice to continue to carry the heaviness of each shirt or we can simple ask hey God, can you hold this?

Practicing Mindfulness Through Prayer

Prayer is an essential pathway to finding serenity through scripture. Engaging in prayer allows for dialogue with God and strengthens our commitment to peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 emphasizes this beautifully: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." This verse highlights the importance of approaching life’s challenges with gratitude. Studies show that individuals who practice gratitude regularly report 25% higher levels of overall well-being. When we pray with intention, we release our burdens and invite His guidance.

Once again, music serves as a tool that helps me navigate anxious moments and cultivate gratitude. Expressing thanks and praising God for my blessings significantly improves my workday. For instance, I often have songs playing in my mind throughout the day. While this might sound amusing or odd, it helps me maintain positivity and peace. I recognize that I can't manage life independently without God, especially when anxious thoughts arise. By praising God, even silently in my mind, I can focus on Him and allow Him to guide me.

Another example is before I go into work I pray in my car. Every time I pray I always start off by thanking God for what I have. In doing so, it changes my perspective on not only how blessed I am, but my mind going into the work day is positive and more focused.

Embracing Community for Support

While scripture provides individual comfort, the role of community in our spiritual journey is crucial. The Bible emphasizes the importance of fellowship and support.

Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to "consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together." In chaotic times, gathering with others fosters shared prayers and encouragement. Being part of a supportive community enhances our ability to remain grounded, creating a collective space for peace amidst life’s noise. As said previously in my personal experience, without my church community, I don't know how lost I would've been. I absolutely LOVE fellowshipping with other Christians. Knowing I'm not alone nor do I have to face challenges in life alone brings peace. Although, I know the LORD will never leave my side, having a community to pray, speak encouragement, and provide helpful advice has helped me on my journey with the Lord.

Daily Applications: Cultivating Chill Vibes

To fully embrace the calmness that scripture provides, incorporating daily practices into our routines is essential. Consider these 3 strategies:

  • Morning Meditations: Begin your day with a few moments in stillness. Reflect on the goodness of God, and the blessings he has given.

  • Journaling: Document your thoughts, prayers, and reflections. This practice can clarify your mind and strengthen your faith.

  • Reading a Devotional: Upon arriving at work and parking, I take time to read my devotional book, "Embraced: 100 Devotions to Know God Is Holding You Close" by Lisa Terkeurst, along with "Jesus Calling." This morning routine prepares my mind for the day and highlights areas in my life that need improvement. What better way to begin the day than by challenging yourself to draw nearer to God?

By engaging in these activities, you may notice a significant improvement in your overall mood and outlook. A study found that 65% of participants who kept a gratitude journal reported feeling more optimistic.

Embracing a Peaceful Journey

Finding serenity amidst chaos is an ongoing journey that requires intention and practice. By embracing the wisdom of scripture, we can cultivate calm and reassurance, preparing ourselves to face life's trials with grace. Whether through prayer, community, or reflective practices, the teachings in biblical texts guide us toward a more peaceful existence.

As we navigate life's complexities, let us remember that peace is attainable, not just as a fleeting moment but as a continuous state of being. By adopting these principles, we can create a meaningful path toward tranquility in our chaotic lives. The wisdom of scripture remains a timeless source of solace and strength, guiding us through life's storms.
