Throughout life's journey, we often seek God for clarity and direction. Sometimes, we look for signs of something greater than such as films, music, and books that touch us deeply, inspiring and guiding us to God in unexpected ways. For me, it was on my 29th birthday, in a comfy movie theater seat, with excitement and eagerness of the 2025 film "Superman". How this movie about a super hero became a pivotal moment that night, leading me into prayer and self-reflection.
The Power of Storytelling
Stories have a unique ability to stir our emotions and illuminate our thoughts. They present challenges and triumphs, reflecting our own struggles. "Superman" exemplifies a hero with extraordinary powers who faces tough moral choices and personal identity.
For example (spoilers), when Superman discovers the remaining portion of a video message from his biological parents, sent with him in a ship that was damaged upon his arrival on Earth. He grapples with the truth about his origins and the reason he was sent to Earth, versus who he truly is. He struggles with what his biological parents intended for him to be compared to what he desires for himself. This depiction of his dual identity made me reflect on my own challenges and the thoughts behind my daily choices and actions, reminding me to prioritize God over societal expectations.
In an honest assessment (spoiler), in the film, Superman chose to surrender rather than escape or hide. Trapped in a "pocket" universe with nowhere to go, he found himself isolated, imprisoned, and subjected to tethering, poisoning, manipulation, verbal abuse, and other recent traumas. He was forced to confront difficult truths that challenged his identity and beliefs. Despite the world perceiving him as a monster intent on destroying everyone and ruling over "Metropolis," he still strives to remain virtuous. He constantly reminds himself that his true desire is to help people and that he is fundamentally a good person.
That really hit me.
The scene continues later as Clark is at his adoptive parents' home, enjoying the tranquil sunrise and reflecting on recent events and his identity. His dad joins him, reminiscing like any father would. It was during this moment that his dad told him it doesn't matter why he was sent to Earth; it's his choices and actions that define who he is. By the end of the scene, his dad expressed how proud he was of Clark. That moment gave me a brief glimpse of God.
Finding God Through Film
Recently, I've experienced moments where my spirit felt constrained, scrutinized, judged, and ignored. Where did I turn for solace? One might assume my first choice would be God. However, He wasn't my initial refuge. In fact, He has been my last resort lately. I've been questioning my beliefs against the backdrop of others' opinions—whether from the world, my boss, coworkers, or even strangers. I've been attempting to navigate this using my own strength.
During that scene, as Clark listens to his dad, gentle music plays in the background. I believe that God communicates in various ways, and for me, music and films are a significant means of connecting with Him. The soft music playing makes me feel that my heavenly father is speaking to me. The song is titled "Your Choices, Your Actions" by David Fleming.
From the beginning of the song until 1:30 minutes, I envision having a conversation with God. I express everything I've been experiencing and feeling, letting go of all the burdens I've been carrying recently, while God simply listens.
Between 1:30 and 1:34, I take a brief pause to let go of everything and listen to what God is communicating to me.
From 1:34 to the end of the song, I envision God speaking to me, reminding me of His nature and my identity as a child of the Most High. He reassures me, saying, "You are loved, seen, heard, and present. I know your thoughts and feelings, your pain, and I know you. I created and love you. You don't need to rely solely on your strength; I can support you. I am near to you (Phil. 4). For you can do all things through me (Phil 4:13). You don't have to face the day alone or doubt your actions. It doesn't matter what others think; what I think matters. I see you as strong, smart, kind, loving, beautiful, my daughter, and I forgive you. I love you. Allow me to carry the burdens, the weight, the heavy thoughts. You know who you are, and you know who I am." It's that "I'm proud of you" dad moment, the instance when you feel unworthy, yet He remains proud of you. The love God has for me, for us, is truly overwhelming.
It brings tears to my eyes as I often forget that I don't have to face life alone. I don't need to worry about others' opinions; what truly matters is what God thinks. The important thing is to embrace the truth and live by it. Let the truth guide your decisions and actions.
When I arrived home, I picked up a journal I received for my birthday and poured my heart out to God, complete with tears and snot. As I listened to the song, I realized I had been carrying internal spiritual burdens that influenced everything I did, said, or thought for a long time. I had been allowing others' opinions to define me, despite knowing my true self. I decided to release it all and trust in God.

The Impact of Reflection
After watching "Superman," it's amazing how a scene in an action-packed superhero film, or soft background music, can reveal His presence to me. The impact of an adult son communicating with his father, whom he hadn't seen in a long time, is profound. The father listens and reminds his son of how proud he is of him. It doesn't matter what others portrayed him as; what matters is who Clark believes he is. He is someone who came to Earth to save the world and its people, to care for others, to prioritize people's needs over his own, and to bring goodness into the world.
This scene in the movie prompted personal introspection and enhanced my comprehension of myself and my faith. That evening, I started writing in a journal, capturing my fears and including God in my everyday discussions.
In these quiet moments, I opened myself to forgiveness. Whether reflecting on a hurtful comment or a past mistake, each act of forgiveness became a step forward, lifting a burden and nurturing spiritual growth. Relying on God every step of the way.
